To: The President of the United States, Members of Congress, and State Governors
My name is Gary Jackson. I am nearly 80 years old, a resident of California, and a man who has spent a lifetime believing in the resilience of this country. I have lived through wars, assassinations, and civil unrest, but I have never feared for the survival of our Republic as I do today.
I am writing to you because the United States is currently being poisoned by a breakdown in two fundamental pillars of our democracy: the Truth and the Rule of Law.
1. The Weaponization of Information We are witnessing a dangerous era where freedom of speech and the press—freedoms designed to protect us—are being used to destroy us. Political discourse has devolved into "Yellow Journalism" and outright propaganda. We see seated politicians and legacy media outlets spreading lies without consequence, shielded by the "Speech and Debate Clause" or legal loopholes regarding "rhetorical hyperbole."
When leaders compare their opponents to "Hitler" or "fascists" to score political points, they are not just using metaphors; they are inciting hatred and paving the road to civil war. You cannot unite a country while simultaneously demonizing half of its citizens with fabricated narratives. We need a return to objective reality, where facts are respected, and leaders are held accountable for the division they sow.
2. The Collapse of the Rule of Law This erosion of truth has bled into our streets, specifically regarding federal law enforcement and immigration. We are a nation of laws, yet we currently watch as local and state governments openly impede federal agencies like ICE from enforcing the laws of the land.
While I understand the constitutional principles of federalism, what we are seeing in "sanctuary" jurisdictions often crosses the line from "non-cooperation" to active obstruction. When local governments shield individuals who have violated our laws, they are not protecting communities; they are creating pockets of anarchy and inviting tyranny. It sends a message that the law is optional, subject to political whim rather than constitutional mandate. This cannot be tolerated.
My Plea to You We are heading toward a disaster of our own making. If the law is not enforced equally, and if the truth is not spoken clearly, we will not have a country left to save.
I ask you, as our elected leaders, to:
· Lower the temperature: Cease the inflammatory, hyperbolic rhetoric that paints political opponents as existential enemies.
· Restore the Rule of Law: Ensure that federal laws are enforced without interference, and that the safety of the American public is prioritized over political posturing.
· Commit to Truth: Hold yourselves and your colleagues to a higher standard of honesty. The American people are tired of being lied to.
I never thought I would see the day when I would look at my country and see no way to prevent its self-destruction. Prove me wrong. Step back from the brink and lead us back to sanity, law, and order.
